You've Got Questions

I've Got Answers

This is a common concern for people. Counseling is “only for” the most extreme cases is inaccurate. I’ve seen everything from new job transitions that cause anxiety to “I just feel lost” to struggles with anger and overwhelm. Not all concerns that come to my office are critical in nature, but the client knows something new needs to happen. Change and clarity need to occur. What’s been done so far hasn’t worked and we need to figure out what’s next. I hope to be a source of kindness, encouragement and honesty with whatever you bring in.

I just have the goal of getting to know you and your concerns. There’s not a lot of pressure from me, but it is VERY common to be nervous…who wouldn’t be for a first session with a new person you don’t know?! But it’s more like just hearing you out and where you’d like to go in therapy, if you have an idea of your goals…if you don’t at the beginning, that’s okay too!

Yes, it’s true that therapy isn’t cheap. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that we spend our money on things we value. If cars, entertainment, trips, etc. are valuable to us, we spend money on them. Healing our inner world as well as doing better in relationships with others through communication and boundaries are the long game. This helps us to do better for ourselves, those around us, at work and when we venture outside of our comfort zones. And, also, I’m trying to work myself OUT of a job. I want you to fully function on your own and only touch base if you want to and if needed. Let’s work together to help you grow so that you can spread your wings! While outcomes cannot be guaranteed because there are multiple things that go into therapy, I promise that I will work hard as we journey together toward what you want from your own life.

This is so understandable! Yes, I am a stranger to you right now. Our bodies and minds pay attention to the unknowns in life. The reason I put so much time and effort into making the videos on this site is to help you see if you feel like you connect with me and my style before you even reach out! Your connection with your therapist is the strongest indicator of how successful you’ll feel therapy to be later on. I want you to get a sense of fit and that’s also why I do free 15 minute phone consultations with you so that you can get a sense of if I’m what you need. Your connection and sense of safety with me deeply matters to me, so I’m committed to you getting a feel for my style before you fill out paperwork

Life coaching is a strengths-base approach to particular struggles for people, mentally or relationally. Certified life coaches have been through been through a certification program to be able to use the label of health coach, but they are not governed by a board of any kind. Their approaches are more guidance-oriented, designed to create positive change and navigating life’s challenges. They create recovery plans to be able to help clients take practical steps toward change. They work toward helping clients establish a sense of stability and help make healthy changes in their relationships with others. Should it be necessary, life coaches are equipped to make professional care referrals for treatment, support and education related to the client’s struggles when the problems presented are beyond their scope of practice.

The average couple waits six years to ask for help after problems start. However, you do not need to be on the verge of divorce to ask for help. In fact, the earlier you see problems and ask for help the less wounding occurs because you get out in front of it. So “feeling distant” or “we’re arguing more than normal” is plenty enough reason to come in for couples work.

The type of trauma work I do does not require you regurgitating every detail of what happened. The beauty of trauma work with Somatic Experiencing is we trust that your body remembers what happened and your nervous system has been protecting you as a result. We will work with only bits of story and little bits of stress at a time. Then we help the body regulate and self-soothe to bring on healing in an incremental way. It’s powerful to heal in this way and it does not require full stories

This happens! We are all human, some people we connect with well and others we do not. Your sense of fit with me matters to me, and it is not an offense to me if you don’t feel a solid connection. All I ask is give it 2-3 sessions before you decide what to do about your care. But you are free to be able to choose who is in charge of your care at any time! I have plenty of referrals up my sleeve as well to help in your search!

I do recommend this at the beginning, due to the nature of what it takes to get traction toward hope and change. However, it isn’t necessary if there are things that get in the way of that. Best traction will initially come from weekly, but you can do biweekly or monthly, just know change will be slower.

There are several differences between these two:

1) Life Coaches are not subject to a governing body. Licensed Professional Counselors have been through a Master’s Level Education through a post-secondary education and are subjected to an ethics code underneath the state board.

2) Professionals have also had a practicum and internship that was required as part of that schooling where they were supervised individually, as a group or both. There is also an “Associate” level of licensing before full licensure at the state level in which the Associate is required to have 3,000 hours of face-to-face counseling that is overseen by a licensed supervisor. Life Coaches do not have such requirements.

3) Life Coaches CANNOT diagnose mental health disorders nor offer “professional” care. The can assess your current goals related to a particular focus and help you implement an action plan toward their goals. Because they cannot diagnose or offer professional help, they cannot be considered “providers” for superbills related to professional therapy to be submitted to insurance.

4) Lastly, Life Coaches are trained to take your current life and future goals and create a concrete action plan for executing those goals. Professional counselors can, of course, do this as well but have also been required to have in-depth coursework to help you process your past and it’s impact on current functioning. Life Coaches are extremely practical in their approach, as Professional Counseling has practical elements together with processing of the past and trauma training.
